Precious and Fine Mexican Opals in Querétaro

Precious and Fine Mexican Opals in Querétaro

Mexican Fire Opals aren’t merely beautiful stones; they are precious, ancient pieces of the earth, steeped in volcanic history and sacred energy. A fire opal from La Trinidad, Querétaro, significantly enhances its rarity and value.

According to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, the finest fire opals are found in Mexico, which is why they are often called "Mexican Fire Opals." These vibrant gemstones have a rich history that dates back to at least the 14th century, when they were collected by the Aztecs. Gemologists typically define fire opals by their bright body colors, ranging from orange to red. However, some sources note that in Mexico, opals that exhibit play-of-color—usually associated with precious opals—are also sometimes referred to as fire opals.

Fire Opals are thought to be very magical because of the distinct pattern of color, which seems to move while viewing.  It wasn't until the 1970s that German gem cutters, looking for faceting material, began attaching the name "fire opal" to transparent non-play-of-color material with yellow-orange to red body color. Among them are matrix Mexican fire opals, where the gem is uniquely situated within their host rock, rhyolite, creating a distinctive appearance reminiscent of fiery windows within the volcanic stone. Mexican Fire Opal should not be confused with Fire Agates.

Precious & Fine

A fire opal from La Trinidad, Mexico, significantly increases its potential interest and value. This region is known for producing high-quality fire opals with vibrant orange, red, and sometimes yellow colors. Mexican Fire Opal is a stone not to be wasted or treated carelessly. These opals came from "Minas de Ópalo el Redentor", which translates to "Redeemer Opal Mines." Crystals unearthed from this region are indeed rare and valuable finds.

What's Next?

We are working on these raw specimens to be thoughtful in meeting current jewelry trends in self-expression, sustainability, and unique designs. Right now, emeralds and turquoise are among other trends, such as: vibrant gemstones, personalized pieces like monograms and engravings, birthstone jewelry that tells a personal story, along with floral motifs.

These Mexican Fire Opals can be cut and polished free-form to best show the play-of-color. Free-form refers to a style of cutting and polishing gemstones that does not follow traditional or symmetrical shapes (like round, oval, or square cuts). Instead, the gem is shaped organically, based on:

  1. The natural shape and features of the raw stone
  2. How to best highlight visual qualities like play-of-color, inclusions, or patterns
  3. A desire for a more unique, artistic, or one-of-a-kind look

The value of a fine opal is based on a number of factors, including brightness, color, pattern, body tone, and consistency (how it looks from multiple angles).  An investment piece in the image below draws serious collectors or buyers.
