What is Rose Quartz?

Rose quartz is a variety of quartz that gets its delicate pink color from trace amounts of titanium, iron, or manganese. It is widely known as the stone of love and is often used in jewelry, home décor, and spiritual practices. This semi-precious gemstone is found in several locations worldwide, including the United States, Brazil, Madagascar, South Africa, Japan, and India.

Machine digging at Hogg Mine

Mystic Ascension went on a private premium dig at Hogg Mine in LaGrange, Georgia for its customers in search for real Rose Quartz, straight from the earth and not from a lab. This wasn't just any dig; it was an exclusive opportunity to be part of the machine dig, giving first access to the freshly turned earth. On site,  you’ll have the best chance to uncover stunning gems like rose quartz and others:

  • Beryl- useful for spiritual growth and to enhance intuition.
  • Rose Quartz- useful for self-love, love, harmony, and peace.
  • Black Tourmaline- useful for grounding and protection.
  • Aquamarine- useful if you want to attract wisdom or have a fear of water and drowning.

How did Mystic Ascension get there?

Hogg Mine, located in west Georgia, LaGrange, is a popular destination for rockhounds looking to uncover rose quartz treasures. It is about 70 miles southwest of Atlanta, making it an ideal day trip from the city. If you're traveling by car, major highways such as Interstate 85 provide direct access to LaGrange. For those coming from out of state, the nearest major airport is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, from which you can rent a car to reach your destination.

Digging Options and Costs

Digging for rose quartz at Hogg Mine is an affordable and exciting experience. The cost is $35 on Saturdays, and children under 16  can dig for free. There are also private digging opportunities during the week with the use of a machine, but reservations are required. Private digs offer a unique advantage, as the clay is loosened, making it feel like fluff and much easier to dig through.

At the mine, you'll meet Ryan, who provided a detailed introduction to the mine, sharing its history and warning us to keep our distance from the machines while Chris (the owner) drives the machine and clears the paths ahead.

Finding Rose Quartz

To increase your chances of discovering rose quartz, keep these tips in mind:

  • Use the Right Tools – Another experienced rockhound suggests using metal tools to better attract beryl. I brought a hammer and a garden trowel but didn't use either of them. A gardening fork was best. A brush and a spray bottle to wet the dirt can help reveal quartz more clearly. It's easy to cut your hands. You could look down and see small blood. Wearing gloves is essential to protect your hands.

  • Be Patient – Staying in one spot for hours is often more effective than moving too quickly. If you move too fast, you might just be preparing the area for the next lucky digger!

What to Consider and Helpful Tips

There is an outhouse available but no running water, so plan accordingly. Since there is no water on-site, bringing extra bottles for drinking and cleaning your finds is highly recommended. Visitors should come prepared with their own tools and buckets, as supplies are not provided on-site.
